Many Massachusetts residents take off during the hot summer months for road trips and vacations. Before you get behind the wheel, Boston Nissan recommends you go over the following car maintenance checklist to make sure your car is road-ready, and won’t cut your trip short with maintenance problems along the way.

If you’re not much of a mechanic, bring your car into the Nissan dealership and we’ll be happy to give it a checkup before you go. Here’s what we recommend you check out:

Leaks: check under the car for any fluid leaks. Is the oil leaking? Is the transmission fluid leaking? If so, both will need repair before you take a trip.

Oil: make sure your oil and filter changes are up to date, particularly if you’re going to be driving a long distance.

Transmission: look in your car owner manual to find out the recommended mileage for having your transmission serviced. If you’re getting close, have it checked out. At a minimum, make sure your transmission fluid is clean.

Radiator: make sure your cooling system is good to go with a check of the radiator, heater core, cooling fans, belts and hoses, and water pump.

Tires: do your tires have enough air? Do they need to be rotated or replaced? Make sure the tires are wearing evenly and have enough tread for the trip, and if they’re looking bald – get a new set of tires.

Air Conditioning: when traveling during the hot summer months, you probably don’t want to be without a working air conditioner. Make sure to check the refrigerant level, compressor clutch and belts.
