The wet weather is headed our way, and the autumn and winter months create a whole new source of irritation to fastidious car owners – mud. Worst of all, mud significantly contributes to carpet wear, aging a beautiful new car before its time. Here at your Boston MA auto body shop and pre-owned Nissan provider, Coastal Nissan, we have some fresh ideas for how to get maintain that carpeting in the harsh weather.

Floor Mats – They irritate all of us when they don’t stay in place, but they are there to serve a valuable purpose – they protect the carpet. If you live in a really muddy place, consider getting rubber mats for the wet months. With those, you can just hose them off in the driveway and air dry them and they are good as new.

Vacuum – Either use a small hand vac that you can keep in the car, or go for the power model that they have at the do-it-your-self car wash. These will suck the dry mud out down deep.

Carpet Shampoo – Use the kind that they sell at the auto parts store for automotive use. These aerosols frequently have little scrub brushes attached to the lid, and these are really effective against mud. If you have a serious mess, get yourself a real scrub brush as it will be much easier to use.

Steam Carpet Extractor – These are usually rental units found at the local hardware or grocery store. If you are dealing with really dirty carpeting and upholstery, these things are the way to go. Before you fire up the extractor, work on the bad areas with a stiff bristle brush and vacuum really thoroughly. If you have particular stains, use a spot remover like 303™ Spot Remover & Cleaner or something similar. After you have taken those steps, use the heated carpet extractor. These machines shoot hot cleaning solution deep into the carpet and then they vacuum it out again along with the dirt.
