As the temperatures increase with the dog days of summer, Boston Nissan wants to remind you to keep an eye on your car’s temperature gauge and signs of overheating.  If a car overheats, expensive engine damages result.  Here are some tips for recognizing the signs of an overheating car and what to do about it:

Recognizing Signs of an Overheating Car

If you see steam coming out from under your hood – you can probably guess your car is overheating – but you can recognize an overheating car before it becomes quite that serious.  When you drive, keep an eye on your temperature gauge.  If you know where it is normally positioned, you’ll notice if it begins to climb into the danger zone or when it begins to run at a hotter temperature than usual.  When it’s hot outside, the car has to work harder to keep itself cool, and when you use your air conditioner, it creates more heat inside the engine and increases the risk for overheating.

Responding to an Overheating Car

When you realize your car is overheating, you don’t want to try and keep driving to your destination.  This is a time when you need to pull over and allow the engine time to cool before you attempt to drive it again.  If your car is steaming – you are likely going to need someone to tow the car.

When the temperature gauge first starts to climb higher, try turning off your air conditioning.  If this solves the problem, you may want to ride with your windows down rather than use the AC.  If it continues to overheat, you’ll need to pull over and turn the engine off so the vehicle can cool down.  Check the coolant level and add fluids if necessary, and have your car checked by a mechanic or our Boston Nissan service center to determine how to prevent overheating in the future.
