Car batteries last longer when they are maintained properly. Most car batteries will not require a ton of effort or work to maintain, but giving them a little attention will certainly help them last a little longer. If the battery dies – your Nissan isn’t going to start, and you’ll be stranded! Nissan dealerships in Boston replace quite a few batteries for customers each year, but you can use the following tips to maintain and prolong the life of your car battery:
A Simple Cleaning – You might be surprised to learn that a battery will last longer if it’s clean. Take a damp rag and wipe off the dirt that has accumulated on the battery. If there’s a lot built up, you can use a mild detergent and warm water to wash it off.
A Detailed Cleaning – For older batteries, you may want to invest a little more time if you see any corrosion building up around the posts and terminals of your battery. Buy a wire brush at the store and use it to scrub the posts. You can remove the black cable first, then the red cable, to give you room to get at the battery with a wire brush. Once you scrub it clean, you can reconnect your battery cables, starting with the red one first. Follow up with some grease around the posts to help prevent future corrosion.
Look at the Battery- Once in awhile, pop the hood and take a peak at your battery. Does it have cracks? Is it bulging anywhere? If so, it’s probably time to replace the battery.
