Having your car break down is always nerve wracking, but breaking down on the fast moving freeway can be pretty dangerous. Even a well maintained vehicle can experience a break down at some point, so whether you are driving a reliable new Nissan or a preowned Nissan, it’s a good idea to have a plan for what to do if your car breaks down on the freeway.

Move to the Safety of the Right Side of the Road

The safest place on the freeway if you must stop your car is on the right shoulder. This is called the emergency lane, and should only ever be used in the case of an emergency or break down situation. Pull over as far as possible to get your car out of traffic.

Call for Help

If you have a cell phone, call 911 and give them your location and situation. If you’re not exactly sure where you are on the freeway and don’t see any landmarks to help you, try to remember what exit or town you entered the freeway from. If you know where you started, and the approximate time you’ve been driving, the 911 operators can help you pinpoint your location and send help.

Go for Help

If you don’t have a cell phone or your phone doesn’t have service, you have two choices: you can wait to see if a passerby or police officer will stop to help; or you can go out on foot looking for help.

If you decide to walk for help, stay on the right shoulder, as far from traffic as you can, and look for a call box. Call boxes are phones available for free sometimes located on freeways. If you don’t come across a call box, walk to the nearest exit and find a gas station or store to call and get help.
