As warmer weather approaches and the snow melts, Boston drivers are often presented with the challenge of potholes. Before the roads are repaired, drivers need to exercise more caution than usual to avoid the potential of damaging their vehicles from hitting potholes. Potholes can cause expensive car repairs. Boston Nissan offers the following tips to help you avoid pothole damages to your car:
Slow Down on Damaged Roads
If you must travel on damaged roads full of potholes, slow down. At least if you hit a pothole at a slower speed, the damages can be avoided or minimal compared to hitting the same potholes at higher speeds.
Keep Proper Tire Pressure
When your tires are properly inflated, they provide cushion between the rim and potholes. With under-inflated tires, the rim is at an increased risk to become bent or damaged when you hit a pothole. Check the tire pressure regularly and inflate as needed.
Keep Your Eyes Peeled for Potholes
The best way to avoid damage to your car from potholes is to avoid hitting the potholes all together! Keep enough room between you and the car ahead of you to see the road and have time to react to potholes in the road; swerve around them whenever you can safely.
If You Do Hit a Pothole:
If after taking proper precautions you still hit a large pothole, make sure you have your rims, alignment and suspension checked and repaired immediately if damaged. A bent wheel will cause the tire to deflate and can cause additional damage to your car. Immediate repair will reduce more costly expenses that result from driving a car with damage.
